"In these photographs we see a ghost. The imprint of a long-forgotten Boston landmark has been inscribed on the facade of a new downtown office building.

The lost landmark is a United States custom house, built in 1810 and visible in the center of the older photo, which was made at the turn of the century. It gave its name to the street – still Custom House Street today – and was designed by a real estate magnate named Uriah Cotting, whose Broad St...
