Internships
In the summer of 2002, cultureNOW began a student internship program with a group of City College Students. That internship was formalized in 2003. It proved so successful that CultureNOW matriculates a class of student interns every summer. We typically take on several college students. The internships last 8-10 weeks from early June through mid August. They are full time positions and are project based. Students work on current mapping, exhibition or website/smartphone projects. Beginning in 2012, mid-winter internships are also offered in Boston for 3 weeks in January coinciding with the J-term break.

“It is amazing to see how much cultureNOW has accomplished for New York City. My internship there gave me the chance to understand how vast and diverse the cultural resources of our city really are.”
David Andersson, Harvard University
Student Intern, 2005
“My internship with cultureNOW helped me to understand how the skills I am learning in the classroom apply to the professional design world. The variety of projects I was able to work on and the amiable nature of the project team made every day at work different, fulfilling and just plain fun.”
Courtney Williams, University of Pennsylvania
Student Intern, 2011
“I went to cultureNOW with little or no graphic design experience. I was able to start from scratch and understand cultureNOW’s projects quickly. It was a very easy learning environment.”
Rebecca Cooper, Harvard University
Student Intern, 2007
“Working on the project Museum Without Walls by cultureNOW was a fantastic opportunity to interact with outstanding architects and artists, hear their stories and learn from their experiences.”
Blanca Abramek, MIT MArch 2017
Student Intern, 2013
“I am a Master’s Candidate in Urban Planning at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, with an undergraduate degree in Fine Arts. Working with CultureNOW as a summer intern has allowed me to engage directly with the people and projects at the intersection between architecture, design, art, and urban systems.
Both as a student of urban planning and design, and as an artist, one of the most central challenges is in how to reach out to the public to make the work and process accessible, transparent, and participatory. CultureNOW is at the forefront of this process, and building on its archive and smart phone app technology will be invaluable to how the public interacts and engages with architecture, art and the build environment.”
Nick Zimmermann, Harvard Graduate School of Design
Student Intern, 2013
“CultureNOW presented a great opportunity for me to really understand the diversity of design firms located in Los Angeles. Having moved to Los Angeles less than one year ago to attend the Heritage Conservation Program at USC, it was difficult for me to grapple with the number of firms, and the amount of significant architecture in the city. I was always looking for maps that showcased architecture, both historic and contemporary, in one place. Many of the maps available only deal with one particular architect, or one era in history. CultureNOW is more comprehensive, and covers many different angles of design. This has been a great experience for me to learn about the work of various firms, to make office visits, and learn about the design process of various significant projects.”
Lindsey Miller, University of Southern California
Student Intern, 2013
“As a student, firms are intimidating -- cultureNOW LA has given me opportunity to interact among professionals and observe both their work ethic and work environment, giving me a boost of confidence to continue pursuing my aspirations of becoming an architect.”
Paula M Narvaez, University of Southern California
Student Intern, 2013
“Collaborating this summer at CultureNOW has been a unique experience that has allowed me to get to know emerging and innovative practices around Boston. At MIT, for example, we visited the SENSEable City Lab a cutting edge research practice that investigates and anticipates changes in the relationship between cities, new technologies and citizens.
We were able to attend one of their working sessions and later get a one-on-one discussion about the work that they were developing and the potential of CultureNOW as an online platform and APP. We gathered videos of their projects and posted them online. For me, this was also a first encounter that then led to an interview session for a full-time position.
In my two months with CultureNOW, I have been able to visit and get to know leading practicioners of about 16 different firms and labs. As a graduating architecture student from Harvard’s Graduate School of Design, this has informed my perspective on how I would like to develop my career by giving me an inside look at different practices and firms.”
