FRANZISKA AMACHER

Franziska Amacher, the founder of Amacher & Associates, has over 25 years experience in all aspects of the building process from project approval, building a team, developing budgets to setting schedules and negotiating with contractors. She has served as co-Chair of "The Committee on the Environment" at the Boston Society of Architects. Ms. Amacher has taught courses in Sustainable Architecture and Design at Wentworth Institute of Technology and at the Boston Architectural College. She is a LEED accredited professional. Ms. Amacher received her Masters Degree in Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. She is a native of Switzerland and fluent in several languages. With a BA in Sociology from the University of Geneva in Switzerland, she worked as a policy researcher, before becoming an architect.

Arreen Andrew is the Program Manager for Development and Public Relations for the Mayor's Office of Arts, Tourism, and Special Events (MOATSE) where she oversees the Boston Cultural Council, which is part of largest grassroots cultural funding network in the nation supporting thousands of community-based projects in the arts, humanities, and sciences annually. She is also responsible for the programming, development and event coordination for MOATSE's annual events. In addition to her work at MOATSE, Ms. Andrew serves on the Greater Boston Convention and Visitors Bureau Multicultural Committee, marketing committee for the Crispus Attucks Children's Center, as well as on the VOSS foundation Boston's women helping women committee. Her studies include Masters in Hospitality and Tourism Management from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst-Isenberg School of Management, Meeting and Event Management at Northeastern University, and a B.S. in Sociology from University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.

Barry Bergdoll is The Philip Johnson Chief Curator of Architecture and Design at the Museum of Modern Art and Professor of modern architectural history in the Department of Art History at Columbia University. Holding a B.A. from Columbia, an M.A. from Cambridge University, and a Ph.D. from Columbia, his broad interests center on modern architectural history with a particular emphasis on France and Germany since 1800. In addition to "Le Corbusier: An Atlas of Modern Landscapes," currently on view at MoMA, Bergdoll has organized, curated, and consulted on many major exhibitions of 19th and 20th-century architecture at MoMA, at the CCA in Montreal, and at the Cite de l'Architecture and at the Musee d'Orsay in Paris. In Spring 2013 he delivered the Mellon Lectures at the National Gallery of Art in Washington. He served as Chairman of the Department of Art History and Archaeology at Columbia University from 2004 to 2007 and President of the Society of Architectural Historians from 2006 to 2008, in addition to participation in juries, editorial boards, and other professional organizations.

Lawrence A. Chan, FAIA has over 35 years of professional experience designing and planning institutional and public projects across North America and overseas, particularly initiatives that engage complex urban settings. Larry was President and Co-Founder of Chan Krieger Sieniewicz, a mid-sized practice for over 25-years that integrated the disciplines of architecture and urban design into all aspects of design and planning. Among Larry's diverse projects for which he was Design Principal or Principal-in-Charge are: the redesign and expansion of the Bund Waterfront Promenade in Shanghai; a campus master plan for the University of Massachusetts Boston; the design of the Signature General Aviation Terminal at Logan International Airport; and the design of Boston's City Hall Plaza Community Arcade. Larry is a Fellow of the AIA, a past President of the BSA, and an adjunct professor of architecture and urban design at Wentworth Institute of Technology. He received a Master of Architecture in Urban Design from Harvard University; a Master of Architecture from University of California Berkeley; and a B.A. in Fine Arts from City College of New York. James H. Collins, Jr., FAIA is President of Payette in Boston, a national practice leader in complex buildings for science, engineering and technology. Since joining Payette in 1979, Jim has applied the best principles in design to create environments that respond to the changing nature of scientific inquiry. His quest to advance the collaborative dialogue between designers and users is marked by a concomitant shift in both the way science is taught in academic settings, and applied in the laboratory. His body of work is singularly focused on the advancement of the architectural profession as a vital partner in defining new ways to support scientific advancement. Jim is a graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute where he earned both Bachelor of Architecture and Master of Business Administration degrees with Distinction. Jim is an active lecturer and has served on numerous design juries, boards, and advisory groups for architectural education. Michael A. Enomoto directs the world-wide architecture, planning, transportation, environmental, landscape architecture, and interior activities of Gruen Associates and became a Partner in 1997. During his tenure with Gruen Associates, Mr. Enomoto has successfully managed a broad spectrum of public and private projects of various sizes and types. His ability to solve complex problems of technical, managerial, and administrative natures has been particularly important on governmental projects. He is an internationally recognized mentor, leader and visionary who organized new and innovative standards for collaborations between architectural firms from across the nation. Mr. Enomoto built a portion of Gruen's practice on an expanded role for the Executive Architect. Over time, he has further expanded the firm into managing teams of consultants on Design-Build projects. This allowed him to manage large and complex projects with more effective value engineering, while meeting fee and budget constraints. Since 1980, Mr. Enomoto has led dozens of collaborative teams totaling over $1.5 billion in construction costs.

Wendy Feuer has been the Assistant Commissioner for Urban Design and Art at the New York City Department of Transportation since June of 2007. The position was created by Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan to help realize the goal of creating world class streets for New York City. These world class streets are rebalanced to accommodate pedestrians, cyclists, vehicles and public spaces that are destinations in themselves. Feuer was also part of the team that produced the DOT Street Design Manual in May 2009, a comprehensive book that provides guidance for city agencies, design consultants and community groups on street designs. From 1996-2007, Ms Feuer was an independent consultant managing large planning and public art projects at Columbia University, John F. David Fixler (FAIA, LEED BD&C AP) is a historic preservation expert at EYP, president of DOCOMOMO U.S./New England and co-chair of the Association for Preservation Technology International (APTI) Committee on Modern Heritage. An internationally recognized expert on the Modern Movement and Midcentury modern buildings, his projects include the renovation of Alvar Aalto's Baker House at MIT and Louis Kahn's Richards Laboratories at the University of Pennsylvania and he is coeditor of the recently released Aalto and America (2012). David has been published in numerous magazines include Architecture, Architectural Record, Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians, APT Bulletin, Metropolis, Cultural Resources Management, Traditional Buildings, Spazio (Italy) and PTAH (Finland). Belmont Freeman FAIA established his independent architectural practice in 1986, as founding principal of Freeman & Pizer Architects. In 1994, Mr. Freeman became sole proprietor of the firm, which was renamed Belmont Freeman Architects. An American of Cuban descent, Mr. Freeman is regarded as an expert on Cuban architecture, a subject on which he speaks and publishes widely. In 2004, he co-produced the landmark exhibition "Architecture and Revolution in Cuba, 1959-1969," at Storefront for Art and Architecture. Mr. Freeman is an adjunct associate professor at Columbia University's Graduate School of Architectural Planning and Preservation where he teaches a design studio within the Historic Preservation program. He was the President of the Board of Directors of Storefront for Art & Architecture, an internationally known not-for-profit design gallery in New York City, from 1998 to 2007. In 2009 Belmont Freeman was named a fellow of the American Institute of Architects. He is licensed as an architect in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania, and holds certification from the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards.

Karin Goodfellow, a graduate of Dartmouth College and Harvard University, has a background in visual arts, museum education and community outreach. As Director of the Boston Art Commission for the City of Boston, she oversees both temporary and permanent public art projects in addition to educational and informational programming. She manages the care, custody and inventory maintenance for the artworks located in and on public property, including Faneuil Hall and the Parkman House. Ms. Goodfellow coordinates with the board of the Art Commission, City departments, project proponents, community groups and funders to further public art projects in the City of Boston. ELLEN LANET

Ellen Lanet is a native Los Angelino and a practicing architect. The past 5 years Ellen's independent practice has continued to explore Los Angeles' unique quality of light to enhance space, neighborhood character to infuse subtlety and sensitivity to the local environment. She participates and advises several community projects professionally: mentoring 6th graders at Para Los Ninos a non-profit LA Charter School along with a group of Architects formed through AIA/LA; Board Member of South Robertson Neighborhood Council working on transportation solutions linking the EXPO line to Century City, Beverly Hills & W. Hollywood while creating neighborhood sensitive redevelopment on Robertson Blvd; and mentoring an admirable group of emerging women architects organized by AWA+D. Ellen has been design educator in the past at Woodbury University and continues to attend Architectural Reviews for a variety of local & out of state college programs. During the prior 20 years, Ellen was a founding principal of Lanet / Shaw Architects. Michael B. Lehrer, FAIA founded his practice, LEHRER ARCHITECTS LA, in Los Angeles in 1985. He is also the Design Partner of LAWRL Design, a deeply interdisciplinary national practice. His work is grounded in the idea that beauty is a rudiment of human dignity. He designs for community with a reverence for light and space. Delight is a matter of extreme gravitas in the work. The firm's work consists of institutional, commercial, industrial, residential and urban design projects. Helen's recent art projects have been in Nairobi, Kenya, East Coachella, CA and AIA Los Angeles chapter offices. In 2012 she wrote the public art chapter in "Art for Community Change," and consults nationally on projects and policy development from her Los Angeles studio.

Arshia Mahmoodi is Principal of VOID, inc., a design and construction firm based in Hollywood, CA. Our practice is dedicated to the discovery of singularities through the exploration of 'extreme' conditions in various notions of space. It is a purported multi-disciplinary plateau that operates at the nodal point of logic and dramatic conditioning. Our architecture like many although cruises toward built environments and rooted in hard sciences - i.e. the integrity of structure and form, statistics and programmatic classifications and weaving complex information into solid states- it distinguishes itself by the matter of synthesizing behavioral qualities ranging from the behaviors of material and structure to human intelligence and ultimately seduction into a unified production.

Lorcan O'Herlihy Architects (LOHA) seeks opportunities to engage the changing complexities of the urban landscape by embracing the role of architecture as a catalyst of change. Since its inception in 1990, LOHA has built over 75 projects ranging in scale and typology from institutional buildings to bus shelters, and from large-scale developments to single-family homes. In 2004 the Architectural League of New York selected Lorcan O'Herlihy as one of its eight "emerging voices" in the United States. The built work of Barton Phelps ranges from civic and university buildings and performing arts facilities to industrial plants, workplaces, houses, and landscape design. It explores the potential of contemporary forms and spaces to interpret their surrounding landscapes and argues for physical and social contexts as primary generators of built form. Recognized also for their achievements in urban design, master planning, and alternative re-use of historic structures, his projects have been published internationally and honored with numerous national and regional design awards. In 1993 he was elected to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects for his contribution to the advancement of architectural design. Mr. Phelps received a B.A. with honors in Art from Williams College and a Master of Architecture degree from Yale University. He has worked at Frank O. Gehry & Associates and was appointed Assistant Dean of the Graduate School of Architecture and Urban Planning at UCLA and Director of Architecture at its Urban Innovations Group.

David Piscuskas, FAIA, LEED AP, co-founded 1100 Architect in 1983. He believes well-designed, functional, and astute architecture can act as a powerful catalyst of change, inspiration, and growth. Following those beliefs, he has completed several award winning buildings, including Little Red School House and Elisabeth Irwin High School (New York), the Irish Hunger Memorial (New York), and The New York Public Library's Battery Park City Branch. David is currently serving as the Vice President for Professional Development for the AIA New York Chapter. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in art from Brown University in 1979 and a Master of Architecture degree from UCLA in 1982. Piscuskas is an NCARB Certificate Holder, Member of the Chamber of Architects in the state of Hessen, and is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (FAIA).

John Powell's Artworks
John Powell is a renowned light installation artist and sculptor and Founder of Light Time in Space. He received an MFA from Mass Art Boston in 1984 and worked as teaching assistant and research fellow at Center for Advanced Visual Studies at MIT until 1993. His focus was on holography and spatial imaging. Powell participated in a number of Center projects in France, Germany, Denmark and Finland. In 1984, he established a studio on Thayer Street in Boston in 1984, where he restored iron and stone building facades in the South End as well as illumination projects included in Boston, Now at Boston's ICA in 1987. In 1993 Mr. Powell started Light Time in Space, Inc. based on the idea that light can be made a palpable part of public projects. Famous works include the illumination of bridges linking Boston to Cambridge (2000), of Evelyn Moakley Bridge (2004), and of the Harvard lab facades at Harvard Business School (2011).

Juergen Riehm, FAIA, BDA is a principal and co-founder of 1100 Architect. He believes in architecture as the all encompassing art form, capable of affecting and portraying all facets of life and nature through a honest and timeless architectural expression. Juergen has guided the firm in a number or projects including the Irish Hunger Memorial (New York), the renovation of the Linguistics Department at New York University, the New York Public Library Battery Park Branch and the Queens Central Library-Children's Library Discovery Center. John Ruble, FAIA began his career as architect and planner in the Peace Corps, Tunisia, where a profound experience of culture, climate, and place provided lasting influences on his work. At the University of California, Los Angeles, he studied and associated with Charles Moore. In 1977, John, Charles, and Buzz Yudell formed Moore Ruble Yudell. With architecture degrees from University of Virginia and the University of California, Los Angeles School of Architecture and Urban Planning, John has been active in teaching and research, leading graduate design studios at UCLA and Cornell University. Together with Buzz Yudell, John is the 2007 American Institute of Architects Los Angeles Gold Medal recipient.

Previously, Gretchen worked as an Associate Editor at Architecture Boston magazine. Her work focuses on community engagement and public art in the built environment. Gretchen is recognized for public installations such as "Making Time Visible" on City Hall Plaza in Boston and "Golden Stairs" in East Boston. She acquired a Master in Architecture from Harvard University and Bachelor of Arts from Smith College.

ERICA STOLLER

Erica Stoller is the director of Esto, the photo agency that represents a group of photographers of architecture and design, and maintains an extensive stock photo archive. Esto was started by Ezra Stoller, her father, whose work is at the core of the collection. There are now seven assignment photographers and more than eighty photographers worldwide who contribute to the library. She acts as a liaison among photographers, designers and those who publish and use the images. She has spoken about architectural photography on numerous occasions and has been instrumental in establishing guidelines for commissioning photography. With Nina Rappaport, Erica is the co-editor of Ezra Stoller Photographer, recently published by Yale University Press. In addition to working with photographs, she is a sculptor creating wall pieces with unexpected and recycled materials.

ABBY SUCKLE

Abby Suckle received her Master of Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design and her undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to opening her own architectural firm, she practiced architecture with Pei Cobb Freed & Partners. She has an architectural practice in New York City with work ranging from residential to public buildings. As the President of cultureNOW, she leads the Museum Without Walls project, which is an attempt to expand beyond gallery walls to create an acoustiguide to the environment blending art architecture and history. She has curated two recent exhibitions on Mapping in New York and Boston. She has taught at Parsons, the Boston Architectural Center and Harvard where she is currently collaborating on a course about Design for Resilience post Sandy. Ms. Suckle is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. In 2012 she received the AIA NY State President Award and the National AIA Collaborative Achievement Award. She also received the 2009 AIA NY State Fellows Award and serves on the board of the NY Chapter of the AIA.

Warren Techentin, is a licensed Architect and the founder and principal of Warren Techentin Architecture (WTARCH). Warren's work is informed by his long standing interest and study of urbanism, performative infrastructures, and pop culture and their effect on the form, space, color, sustainability, and the participatory dimension of architecture. Warren frequently serves on architectural committees and juries throughout North America and Europe and is actively involved in a variety of Architectural and philanthropic organizations. He has been an Executive Board Member and a past President of the Los Angeles Forum for Architecture and Urban Design. Previous to WTARCH, Warren was co-principal of Techentin Buckingham Architecture from 2001-2010. Warren is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Southern California. Warren holds a BA in Architecture from the University of California Berkeley, a Masters of Architecture (MArch), and a Masters of Architecture in Urban Design (MAUD), both from Harvard University.

NADER TEHRANI

Nader Tehrani is the Principal of NADAAA, a practice dedicated to the advancement of design innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and an intensive dialogue with the construction industry. He is also a Professor and Head of the Department of Architecture at MIT. Tehrani received a B.F.A. and a B.Arch from the Rhode Island School of Design (1985, 1986). Tehrani received a M.A.U.D from the Harvard Graduate School of Design (1991). Tehrani's work has been recognized with notable awards, including the Cooper Hewitt National Design Award in Architecture (2007), the United States Artists Fellowship in Architecture and Design (2007), and the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Architecture (2002). Having won the commissions of three Schools of Architecture, Tehrani has completed the Hinman Research Building at the Georgia Institute of Technology, and is currently working on completion of the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning at the University of Melbourne, and the Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design at the University of Toronto.

Anna Torriani, AIA is a graduate of the ETH Zurich, Switzerland. She worked with Mario Botta, Paul Rudolph and other distinguished firms in Manhattan while being involved in the artworld as an airbrush painter. A few of her pieces are part of international collections. After winning with L. Pagnamenta First Prize in the New York Waterfront Competition, she started a professional collaboration, Atelier Pagnamenta Torriani, and dedicated herself fulltime to art and architecture. The work of Atelier has received awards and has been published locally and internationally. Anna Torriani was appointed in 2010 by the Secretary General Ban-Ki-moon to serve on the Advisory Board of the United Nations Capital Master Plan. She has lectured at the BIS Congress EPF in Lausanne, at EXPA in Italy, at Duke University, at the American Library Association Convention, at the American Institute of Architects in New York City and she has been featured in various cultural programs. She is a registered architect in the state of New York and in Switzerland. She is a member of the American Institute of Architects. Anna Torriani is co-chair of the Public Architecture Committee at the AIA New York Chapter.

Born in Davis, California, Scott Uriu is a licensed architect based in Los Angeles. He received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from California State Polytechnic Pomona in 1993 and studied at the Architectural Association in London, Diploma Unit 7 from 1992-1993. Uriu also was an undergraduate mathematics major at the University of California, Davis in 1991. He is a professor and teaches design and applied studies the University of Southern California and at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCIARC) . Anthony Vanky is a Partner Strategist at the MIT Senseable City Lab and a PhD student in Urban Studies and Planning at the MIT. Trained as an urban designer and architect, he has worked on projects across the United States and his design work has been exhibited widely, including at the Venice Architectural Biennale, the Dutch Design Week, Gwangju Design Biennale, and New Orleans DesCours. At the MIT Senseable City Lab, Anthony's research considers the use of new, pervasive sensing technologies on urban planning processes. Anthony has organized workshops and presentations on issues of design, technology and urbanism for organizations including Volkswagen AG, Chrysler, Harvard University, Skanska Worldwide Research & Development, and the Smithsonian Institution.

Jane Weinzapfel is Principal and cofounder of Leers Weinzapfel Associates. The firm's award winning projects include the Paul S. Russell, MD Museum of Medical History and Innovation, the University of Cincinnati Student Services Pavilion, the University of Pennsylvania Chiller Plant, and the MBTA Operations Control Center in Boston. Jane lectures widely throughout the United States and abroad. She has taught at MIT's School of A+P, University of Arizona, and was a Visiting Artist at the American Academy in Rome. Weinzapfel is an Overseer and former Trustee of the Boston Architectural College and is on the Board of Trustees of Boston by Foot. Claire Weisz, FAIA is a founding principal of WXY architecture + urban design, which focuses on creating innovative public space, structures and cities. WXY's work includes the creative envisioning of new waterfronts, civic architecture, adaptive reuse and urban revitalization efforts. Frequently cited in the media and professional circles, Claire has served on numerous design award and competition juries and was co-editor of AD magazine's "Extreme Sites: Greening the Brownfield" issue. She is a registered architect in California, New York and New Jersey. Among other public recognitions, WXY has won AIA New York Chapter Merit and Honors awards and was selected as one of The Architectural League's Emerging Voices in 2011.

Carol Willis is the founder, director, and curator of The Skyscraper Museum. An architectural and urban historian, she has researched, taught and written about the history of American city building. She is the author of Form Follow Finance: Skyscrapers and Skylines in New York and Chicago (Princeton Architectural Press, 1995), which received an AIA book award and was named "Best Book on North American Urbanism, 1995" by the Urban History Association. She has published widely and has appeared in numerous television documentaries and radio broadcasts. Ms Willis is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Urban Studies at Columbia University where since 1989 she has taught in the program The Shape of Two Cities: New York and Paris in The Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation.

James Wines, winner of the Smithsonian Institution's 2013 National Design Award for Lifetime Achievement, is an architectural designer, visual artist, and writer. He is the founder of the multidisciplinary practice SITE, a New York City based architecture practice and a Professor of Architecture at Penn State University. During the past decade, he has lectured worldwide and there have been twenty-two monographic books and museum catalogues produced on Mr Wines' projects for SITE and their related models and drawings. His book DE-ARCHITECTURE was published by Rizzoli International in 1987, and in 2000, Tashen Verlag in Germany released his book entitled Green Architecture. Some of his most notable projects include the Best Products Showrooms and the Shake Shake at Madison Square Garden. He has been the recipient of over 25 art and design awards such as The American Academy in Rome, The Guggenheim Foundation, and the Pulitzer Prize for Graphics. Wines was educated at Syracuse University, where he studied art history, sculpture and literature, graduating with a Bachelor or Arts in 1956.

Buzz Yudell's passion for architecture grew out of a synthesis of artistic and social concerns. While at Yale College, his work in sculpture was complemented by exploration of sciences and humanities. Graduate studies at the Yale School of Architecture expanded these boundaries to a range of scales from small construction in situ to community participation and urban design. Here, he began his long association with Charles Moore. In 1977, Buzz, Charles and John Ruble formed Moore Ruble Yudell, a partnership based on shared humanistic values and a celebration of collaboration within the office and beyond to their clients and communities.Throughout his career, Buzz has found teaching, writing, and community service to be critical in the evolution of both the theoretical and cultural role of architecture in shaping and celebrating place and community. He has taught at Yale, University of California, Los Angeles, University of Texas, Austin, and was honored to hold the distinguished Howard Friedman Chair of Architecture at University of California,Berkeley.In 2006, Buzz and John's leadership was recognized when the firm received the National American Institute of Architects Firm Award, the highest honor that can be bestowed to an American architecture firm.
