"This stretch of Centre Street in Jamaica Plain remains today what it has been for a century, the main street of a self-contained neighborhood in a city that is made of such neighborhoods.

Coming toward us in the older photograph is the No. 212 streetcar, which will eventually swing onto Huntington Avenue on its way to downtown Boston. The year is about 1910, and Jamaica Plain is still a ‘streetcar suburb,’ a term coined by historian Sam Bass Warne...
