The New York State Commission on National and Community Service and the Corporation for National and Community Service hosted the national kickoff for AmeriCorps Week 2009. More than 1,300 AmeriCorps nd other National Service members as well as community volunteers from across New York State spent the day providing service to the residents of East Harlem. Volunteers from CultureNOW participated in the day-long Harlem community service project concentrated on greening, neighborhood beautification, and energy conservation. They collaborated with the AIA New York Chapter in a design charrette at the Thomas Jefferson Park Recreation Center to explore ways to 'green the building' The first pre-publication copies of the HarlemNOW map were given to many officials. Here Margaret Castillo, Vice President for Public Outreach at the AIA gives the first copy to Govenor Patterson. |
