Overland Partners | Architects fosters collaborative relationships and a discovery process that pushes architecture beyond aesthetics and shelter. This gives rise to places that tell stakeholders' collective story. Through this experience, visitors become participants. They find voice for their own stories. They are changed.

Architecture is our means to articulate visions and ideas that pull communities together. In turn, it helps to repair rifts and establish platforms to reach our collective aspirations. Our projects bring people back into relationships with the land, their history and each other. We work every day to live up to our mission statement, “Modeling how we should live and influencing the world through the practice of architecture.”

Our founding Partners met at the University of Texas at Austin in the 1970's and became good friends. Following graduation, Tim Blonkvist worked with I.M. Pei in New York City; Rick Archer moved to Washington, DC with Shalom Baranes Associates; Madison Smith earned an MBA in Real Estate and worked with developer Trammell Crow; and Robert Schmidt utilized his engineering and construction background with Gerald Hines in Dallas. In 1982 the four friends committed to a lifelong friendship and the start of a business.

Overland Partners | Architects was incorporated in 1987, just as the economic crash hit Texas. Pursuing all kinds of projects, they learned to apply their creative problem solving abilities to real world problems - some of which weren't about architecture. They devoted themselves to creating a process that defined a successful project as one where their clients saw themselves and their vision reflected in the design of the building.

In 1987 they were able to bring their dream to life. Over the years, the firm has grown from four friends working on small remodeling projects to over 50 professionals working on significant public buildings throughout the United States, as well as internationally. More importantly, Overland Partners has become a group of passionate individuals working together to influence the world through their architecture.

Description

A kinetic shade structure for the new Robert B. Green Clinical Pavilion in San Antonio. Composed of 5029 tilted aluminum vanes that sway in the wind, the artwork seeks to dissolve the boundary between architecture and atmosphere, linking the building to the ever-changing and normally invisible currents of air. Developed in collaboration with Overland Partners and RTKL Architecture.
