cultureNOW was thrilled to be selected to be one of the 33+ partners of Archtober, Architecture and Design Month in New York City. We thought this would be a wonderful opportunity to further develop our smartphone apps. Version 4.02 which we released last week includes an Events calendar which is currently featuring what is happening in New York during Archtober. It will search for events by location, time and you can even rsvp directly from the app.
One of the highlights of Archtober are the 31 'Buildings of the Day', all award winning recently completed buildings in NYC honored by the AIA NY Chapter. Our new home screen changes daily to showcase each of these projects as well as related images and podcasts. We've been busy recording many podcasts so that you can now listen to some of NYC's most interesting architects discuss their work.
On another note, cultureNOW has reached another milestone. There are now 60 public art collections collaborating with us - little did we realize when we began this effort slightly more than a year ago that we could get this far in such a short time.
The State of Colorado's Public Art Collection believes in capitalizing the immense potential of the creative sector to drive economic growth in Colorado. Working as part of the State Office of Economic Development, Colorado Creative Industries envisions sustained investment and increased support for the creative sector from the local governments and coalitions.
This approach is especially relevant in the recent economic times as we witness shrinking budgets for public art and its maintenance. By featuring the State of Colorado's Public Art Collection this month, cultureNOW would like to foster a discussion on this approach and engage in a dialog about ideas that would further strengthen these goals.

cultureNOW will be hosting its Third Annual Historical Tour of Harlem: The Capital of Black America as part of openhousenewyork on October 16th from 3-5 pm with James Kaplan as the tour guide.
Featured Artist: BRAD GOLDBERG This month's featured artist is Brad Goldberg whose work is a rich fusion between sculpture, landscape, urban design, place, culture and community. Brad's work reflects a strong interest in archetypal forms and the evolution of technology. His Map Sculpture is a visually based way-finding system designed for the DART Light Rail CBD Transitway. Found at each of its four stations, a Map Sculpture illustrates the entire Central Business District in relief bronze.
Cisterna is a water sculpture constructed of regional limestone, which collects and stores surface runoff water from the surrounding watershed in Montgomery Farm, Allen TX prompting an interesting discussion on the interconnectedness of aesthetics and function in the realm of art and sculpture.

Featured Architect: FXFOWLE We are honored to feature FXFowle this month. The firm's diverse portfolio of projects includes work of all scales across the globe. Over the past 30 years, FXFowle has had a pivotal role in many significant projects in NYC. Their strength lies in their collaborative philosophy; two of the most recent successful projects include Lincoln Center with Diller Scofidio+Renfro and The New York Times Building with Renzo Piano.
