Mapping the Cityscape: New Needs and New Tools
May 5th, 2011

Center for Architecture, New York City

Presented by AIA NY Planning & Urban design committee), cultureNOW

The symposium focused on the role of emerging digital technologies in transforming our perception of our environment. Traditionally, mapping has been viewed as a tool to convey information graphically in a two-dimensional representation of place. The advent of GIS, Google maps, and smartphone technology has expanded the scope of the medium to embrace user generated input. The new maps are reaching both a target and a broader audience simultaneously. Recognizing these trends, the panel addressed the state of the art and how the design professions can effectively engage these new methodologies to better shape our urban landscape.
