Bringing together architects, artists, activists, planners, and designers whose work explores the impact of context on the built environment, a pecha-kucha style presentation of design voices addressing domains beyond our normal reach. Video simulcast between Boston and New York to present the collection of ideas to both audiences. The pucha-kucha aimed to kick-start a dialogue between practitioners and present an inventive way of thinking about, perceiving, and designing global and local built environments. A discussion about how historical, cultural, and civic contexts become frames of reference for our presenters.

David is a Principal at EYP specializing in the rehabilitation of 20th century structures including Alvar Aalto’s Baker House at MIT, Louis Kahn’s Richards Labs at Penn and the United Nations Headquarters. A frequent teacher, writer and lecturer, David’s work has been published internationally and he has helped organize numerous conferences on a wide-range of topics. A Peer Review architect for the GSA, he is active in a variety of global organizations, including holding leadership positions in APTI and the Society of Architectural Historians. David is also co-founder and president of DOCOMOMO – US/New England and is an expert on the history and impact of modernism in this region.

Landing Studio
Marie Law Adams is a founding partner of Landing Studio, an architecture, design, and research practice whose work negotiates the intersection of large scale global infrastructure with urban environments. Landing Studio has developed projects with port facilities and transit infrastructure entities in Boston and New York by designing shared industrial and public access landscapes, light installations, festivals, exhibitions, tours, and industrial/community operations agreements. Landing Studio received a Progressive Architecture award for the Rock Chapel Marine project in 2013, the Architectural League Prize in 2015, and they were a winner of the Design Biennial Boston in 2015.
Marie is a licensed architect and received a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from the University of Michigan and a Master’s degree in Architecture from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she was a Presidential Fellow and recipient of the AIA Medal.
FRANZISKA AMACHER FAIA,
Amacher and Associates
Founder of Amacher and Associates, Architects. Franziska’s passion to build a sustainable environment is reflected in her work throughout her career from the design of house additions and renovations to designing communities to her urban designs and to her advocacy work. With her MArch from Harvard she started her career with the design of a solar heated farmhouse. She was a pioneer promoting sustainability with the design of many resource efficient and more healthful buildings, including award winning net zero buildings. But resource efficiency from optimizing layouts to reused or recycled materials to low toxicity were as strong factors as energy efficiency. Enhancing social sustainability through designing environments to promote viable and dynamic communities is another aspect of her work. Saving and recycling old buildings in the city was an important task not just for resource efficiency, but also to reinvigorate community identity through preserving cultural memory. Typical for her work is the redesign of a mixed-use building that won an award for reinvigorating a neighborhood and preserving a historic building.
ANN BEHA FAIA,
Ann Beha Architects
Ann Beha's leadership is marked by work with strong historical, cultural and educational content, designing buildings which serve the public and expand the client's vision. Her firm, Ann Beha Architects, is Boston based but active nationally and internationally., Her current projects include the US Embassy in Athens for the US Department of State, the Renovation and Expansion of the Main Group Building 2 at MIT; the master plan for the Smithsonian Institute’s National Museum of American History; and her second expansion for the New Britain Museum of American Art.
Ann Beha is a graduate of Wellesley College, holds a Master of Architecture Degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and was a Loeb Fellow at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University. She has been Distinguished Visiting Professor of Architecture at the City College of New York, past Trustee and President of Historic New England, and member of Visiting Committees at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
JEFFRY BURCHARD AIA,

Jeffry Burchard is an Architect. He is a Principal at MACHADO SILVETTI in Boston where he designs architecture, urban design and master-planning projects throughout the world. He has recently completed the New York University Global Center for Academic and Spiritual Life in New York City and a master-plan for the 21 million square foot Tun Razak Exchange in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Since 2012 Jeffry has been a visiting faculty member at the Harvard GSD where he offers instruction in Core Architecture Studios, advises thesis students, and is involved in various administrative committees. He is a frequently invited critic for student work, recently attending design reviews at the Architectural Association, RISD, Columbia, Cornell, Pratt, Northeastern, MIT, the New York Institute of Technology, and the University of Toronto. Jeffry holds two Masters degrees in Architecture, the first with Honors from the University of Idaho, and the second a post-professional Masters with Distinction from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Jeffry’s work and writings have been featured in publications such as CLOG, IntAR, Competition, Platform, StudioWorks, and Architect Magazine.
HECTOR TARRIDO-PICART,
Harvard Graduate School of Design
Héctor Tarrido-Picart graduated from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design with dual degrees in Landscape Architecture and Urban Design. He was the President of the Harvard Graduate School of Design – African American Student Union (GSDAASU) from 2013-2015. He has been published in the *Harvard Design Magazine, *the *Harvard Journal of African American Public Policy, Aggregate Online Magazine*. Tarrido-Picart's #BlackLivesMatter Mapping Project is part of a summer fellowship grant the GSDAASU received from the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies.
MARYANN THOMPSON FAIA,
Maryann Thompson Architects
Maryann Thompson founded Maryann Thompson Architects in 2000. She specializes in architecture that is sustainable, regionally driven and that attempts to heighten a sense of its immediate site and landscape. Maryann carries degrees in both architecture and landscape architecture, bringing to her practice an interdisciplinary approach where issues of site and landscape are central to design thinking. Recent projects completed and in process include Pier 2 and the Warming Hut at Brooklyn Bridge Park, Princeton Childcare Center and The Visitor Center at Walden Pond State Reservation. Her work has been widely published, such as in Architectural Record, Design New England and A+U, and her work has received numerous awards and honors, including two AIA National Honor Awards, an AIAny Merit Award, numerous AIA New England Design Honor Awards, and BSA Honor Awards for Design Excellence. Maryann is a Professor in Practice of Architecture at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University, where she is a member of the Architecture faculty and teaches core studio.
FRANO VIOLICH FAIA,
Kennedy & Violich Architecture
As a Founding Principal at KVA Matx, Frano Violich has created an interdisciplinary design practice which engages material fabrication, digital technology and the conservation of natural resources to expand the public life of buildings and cities. Violich studied Architecture at UC Berkeley and received his MArch from Harvard. Violich has served as Design Commissioner with the BSA, the Editorial Board of Architecture Boston, and is currently on the Honors & Awards Committee. KVA has worked internationally including “Smart Materials” housing in Hamburg, Germany, and the Portable Light Project in Mexico and Brazil. Since 2013 the firm has completed the E34th Street ferry terminal on Manhattan’s East River, a new Law School at U Penn, Harvard’s Anthropology Building and is about to break ground on an Institute for Data Science at the University of Rochester. KVA’s material research division Matx has developed designs and technology applications for Philips, Herman Miller, 3M, North Face and the US Department of Energy. The firm’s design work for the German-based Meister Consulting Group, now headquartered in Boston, has extended to include the digital fabrication of all of its furniture and acoustic wall panels. Violich has lectured widely and taught at RISD, Berkeley, UVA, Michigan, and was Cornell’s Gensler Visiting Professor in Spring 2014.

James S. Russell, FAIA, is an architecture critic and journalist, who writes for numerous publications, including The Economist, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Architectural Record and the Atlantic’s CityLab. He blogs at www.jamessrussell.net. He was the architecture critic at Bloomberg News for nine years. Mr. Russell was a long-time editor at Architectural Record magazine, where his work helped the publication win a National Magazine Award and other industry awards.
His book, The Agile City: Building Well Being and Wealth in an Era of Climate Change, was published by Island Press. It argues that adapting cities and communities can quickly slow global warming and blunt its effects. He is an adjunct professor at Architects. He lives in New York City.

Stephen Cassell, AIA, LEED AP holds an undergraduate degree in architecture from Princeton University and received his Master of Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. He has twice served as the Shure Professor at the University of Virginia and as the Friedman Professor at the University of California at Berkeley. He has taught at Harvard, Princeton, and MIT, and lectured throughout the United States and abroad. Stephen was a member of the New York City Green Codes Task Force. He is Chair of the Van Alen Institute and is on the Leadership Committee of the Lower Mississippi River Delta Design Initiative.
JEREMY EDMISTON,

Principal at SYSTEMarchitects, Edmiston is also an associate professor at the City College of New York School of Architecture. SYSTEM’s work has won the AIA Wilkinson Award, the AIA New Housing New York Competition, an Australian Timber Design Award, the Bank of America Design Award, the McGraw Hill Best Construction Award, and an Architzer A+ Award for Architecture + Materials. Perhaps his most influential work is BURST*008 with Douglas Gauthier, a prefab house commissioned and fully constructed by the Museum of Modern Art.
Edmiston is the recipient of the Harkness, Fulbright, Lindbergh, and Beyra Hadley Fellowships, and the Department of Energy’s Center of Excellence Fellowship. His work has been featured in Domus, Abitare, Bauwelt, Log, Architectural Record, LeFigaro, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Financial Times, The New York Review of Books, Vanity Fair, and Time Magazine.
EMMA FULLER,
Diane Lewis Architects
Emma Fuller has worked on and overseen the design and construction phases of diverse scale projects, which date from the AIA 150+ Brunner Grant exhibition, to large urban projects such as the winning competition project Riverview Music Campus and Adaptive Reuse Project at Sarasota Florida. She was the Project Architect for the design and execution of the Adams Penthouse on CPW, and the Quadrata House Bridgehampton, as well as the current schematic design and sustainability study for an estate in Greenwich Connecticut and an institutional master plan in progress.
She is Visiting Assistant Professor at Pratt Institute, and has recently designed and installed the exhibit “Richmond as a Work of Art” supported by a grant from CultureWorks. She has published numerous essays and her most recent articles can be found in both the Richmond Times Dispatch and Style Weekly on the issues of urban design in Richmond VA where she was raised. Current projects include a research and drawing study of Torino as well as advocacy proposals for significant works of architecture in Richmond.
ELIE GAMBURG,
Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates PC
Elie Gamburg is a Director at Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates (KPF). Since 2002, he has designed projects in the United States, Asia, Europe, India, and the Middle East housing a variety of programs including academic, mixed-use, master planning, office, residential, and retail. Mr. Gamburg is a graduate of Harvard’s Graduate School of Design, where he was awarded the Kevin V. Kieran Prize for highest academic performance. He has been a professor of studio design at NYIT, taught introductory studios at Cornell, and has served as a guest critic and lecturer at Harvard, Yale, Cornell, University of Pennsylvania, and Syracuse among other institutions.
Domestically, Mr. Gamburg worked on the 9.5 million-square-foot Boston Seaport Square "Innovation District" Master Plan and on the concept design for NYU’s Center for Urban Science and Progress (CUSP) in New York. Presently, Mr. Gamburg is designing a new 40-story LEED Platinum office building that will be among the first completed in Beijing’s new Central Business District. Other office projects include Harbin Bank’s headquarters in Harbin, China, and the First International Finance Center (FIFC) in Mumbai, which is KPF’s first fully constructed project in India, and one of just a handful of Indian buildings that have attained LEED Gold status. The FIFC was named the “Best Building of Mumbai” in 2012 and is home to tenants including Citigroup, Apple and Oracle.
AUDREY MATLOCK FAIA,
Audrey Matlock Architect
Audrey Matlock leads Audrey Matlock Architect, a NYC firm is committed to fusing architecture, technology landscape and contemporary culture. Her project base is international with a range of building types that includes cultural, commercial, residential, exhibition and multi-use. Her tools are analysis, research, multidisciplinary strategies and innovative thinking. She is especially focused on the visual and performance possibilities of combining inventive engineering with architecture in the design of buildings. An active member of the architectural community, Matlock participates on design juries and panels, and lectures and teaches regularly throughout the US and in Turkey. She is strongly committed to educating clients, students and colleagues—to challenge preconceptions and lift expectations for our built environment. She has served as the NY Chapter AIA Co-VP for Design Excellence, Chair of the AIA Design Awards Committee and is a Peer for the GSA.

Jeffrey Murphy is a founding Partner of Murphy Burnham & Buttrick Architects and has practiced architecture for 28 years. Jeffrey’s special expertise in design for cultural, civic and educational institutions has led to a range of rich and compelling projects, many of which have been recognized for their design excellence and social engagement. As a LEED-accredited professional, Jeffrey believes sustainability is an integral component of architecture. Jeffrey leads the firm in seeking design solutions that embody both conceptual clarity and environmental responsibility. As Partner-in-Charge, Jeffrey has led projects for a diverse group of clients including the UNICEF Innovations Lab, St. Patrick's Cathedral, The American University of Beirut and The City of New York School Construction Authority. Jeffrey holds a Master in Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design and a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Virginia. At Harvard he was a recipient of the Aga Khan Program for Islamic Architecture Research Fellowship and was awarded the post-graduate Wheelwright Fellowship. Jeffrey’s work reflects the idea that well-considered design positively impacts communities. He has served as Secretary of the New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, and as a board member of Community District 7 in Manhattan.
THADDEUS PAWLOWSKI,

Thaddeus Pawlowski is an urban designer who has worked At NYC Department of City Planning, Mayor's Office of Housing Recovery and Office of Emergency Management. He earned his Masters in Architecture from University of Pennsylvania, recently finished a Loeb Fellowship at Harvard University and is now teaching Urban Design at Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation. He has lectured around the world and published extensively on urban design and climate change adaptation.
NINA RAPPAPORT,
Nina Rappaport is an architectural critic, curator, historian, and educator. For over seventeen years she has been publications director at Yale School of Architecture, for which she edits the bi-annual magazine Constructs, exhibition catalogs, and the Studio Books series.
She directs the project, Vertical Urban Factory, which includes a traveling exhibition, public programs, and a book to be released in September with Actar 2015. She curated the exhibitions on Ezra Stoller, The Swiss Section at the Van Alen Institute, and Saving Corporate Modernism, at Yale. She authored the book Support and Resist: Structural Engineers and Design Innovation and co-edited the books Ezra Stoller: Photographer and Long Island City: Connecting the Arts. She has written numerous essays on structural design, architecture, and global industrial landscapes. She is a founding board member of Docomomo US and NY/Tri-State.
CATERINA ROIATTA AIA,
TRA Studio
Caterina received her Doctor in Architecture Degree from the IUAV Instituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia in Italy and her Master from the GSD, which she attended as a Fulbright Scholar. Following her studies, she worked at Vignelli Associates, Pei Cobb Fredd and Partners and Fox Pedersen Conway. She founded in 1997, with Robert Traboscia, TRA studio. The name TRA, represents not only the founders’ initials, but also the studio’s philosophy: finding the intersections between functionality and experimentation and the balance between the often opposing forces that are part of building in a urban context. Current projects span from restorations and additions of landmarked structures to new mixed use buildings. She is Co-Chair of the AIA historic Buildings Committee.
JOEL SANDERS, AIA,
Joel Sanders Architect
Combining teaching with practice, speculative projects with built commissions, Joel Sanders dedicates his work to the creation of innovative environments in response to today’s rapidly changing culture. Over the years, his work has explored the complex relationship between culture and social space, looking at the impact that evolving cultural forces (such as gender identity and the body, technology and new media, and the nature/culture dualism) have on the designed environment.
In addition to being the Principal of his New York based studio JSA, Sanders is a Professor of Architecture at Yale University.
JSA projects have been featured in international exhibitions and drawings and models created at the studio belong to the permanent collections of MoMA, SF MoMA, Art Institute of Chicago and the Carnegie Museum of Art. The firm has received numerous awards, including six New York Chapter AIA Awards, two New York State AIA Awards, two ALA / IIDA Library Interior Design Awards, four Interior Design Best of Year Award, and two Design Citations from Progressive Architecture.
Sanders frequently publishes his work and critical writings in international publications such as Architectural Record, Architect, Interior Design, Architectural Digest, The New York Times, Wallpaper, and A+U. He is the editor of Stud: Architectures of Masculinity. Monacelli Press released a monograph of his work, Joel Sanders: Writings and Projects, in 2005. His most recent book, Groundwork: Between Landscape and Architecture, co-edited with Diana Balmori, was released by Monacelli Press in 2011.
KEN SMITH,
WORKSHOP: Ken Smith Landscape Architect
Ken Smith is one of the best-known of a generation of landscape architects equally at home in the worlds of art, architecture, and urbanism. Trained in both design and the fine arts, he explores the relationship between art, contemporary culture, and landscape. His practice, Workshop: Ken Smith Landscape Architect, was established in 1992 and is based in New York City. He is committed to creating landscapes, especially parks and other public spaces, as a way of improving the quality of urban life. Much of his work pushes beyond traditional landscape typologies—plaza, street, and garden—to landscapes that draw on diverse cultural traditions and influences of the contemporary urban landscape. Smith’s approach is directed at projects of varying scales and types: temporary installations, private residential gardens, public spaces, parks, and commercial projects. With a particular emphasis on projects that explore the symbolic content and expressive power of landscape as an art form, the Workshop specializes in the investigation of new expressions in landscape design. Ken Smith is a graduate of Iowa State University and the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. He has taught and lectured at Harvard, the City College of New York, and other universities and institutions around the world. Smith’s work has been published widely in the popular and trade press.
SYLVIA SMITH FAIA,
FXFOWLE Architects
Sylvia Smith formed and leads FXFOWLE's Cultural/Educational Studio, which has won numerous awards for design excellence. Since joining the firm in 1982, she has been responsible for program intensive projects of varying scope and size. From private schools and universities to large and small cultural institutions, she is constantly cultivating new ways to make architecture more expressive, enriching, and sustainable. Sylvia sits on the Board of Trustees and Executive Committee of Dickinson College, the Board of Directors for the Design Trust for Public Space and the Board of Directors of Storefront for Art and Architecture. She is a member of the Advisory Board of the Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation and the Yestermorrow School, and former Chair of the Fellows Committee for the AIA New York Chapter and the Dean's Advisory Board of the University of Virginia School of Architecture. In 2008, Sylvia was elevated to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects, and in 2013, Sylvia was awarded the American Institute of Architects’ Fellow’s Award in recognition of her commitment to professional development, mentorship, women’s advocacy, and design excellence.

Adam Yarinsky, FAIA, LEED AP holds an undergraduate degree in Architecture from the University of Virginia and a Master of Architecture from Princeton University. He served as the Sanders Teaching Fellow and the Eliel Saarinen Professor at the University of Michigan, and as the Shure Professor at the University of Virginia. He also taught at Harvard, Princeton, Yale, and other universities. Adam has lectured throughout the United States and abroad. He has also written for A+U, Places Journal, 306090, and other publications. Adam is a member of the board and executive committee for the Places Journal Foundation.

David is a Principal at EYP specializing in the rehabilitation of 20th century structures including Alvar Aalto’s Baker House at MIT, Louis Kahn’s Richards Labs at Penn and the United Nations Headquarters. A frequent teacher, writer and lecturer, David’s work has been published internationally and he has helped organize numerous conferences on a wide-range of topics. A Peer Review architect for the GSA, he is active in a variety of global organizations, including holding leadership positions in APTI and the Society of Architectural Historians. David is also co-founder and president of DOCOMOMO – US/New England and is an expert on the history and impact of modernism in this region.

Landing Studio
Marie Law Adams is a founding partner of Landing Studio, an architecture, design, and research practice whose work negotiates the intersection of large scale global infrastructure with urban environments. Landing Studio has developed projects with port facilities and transit infrastructure entities in Boston and New York by designing shared industrial and public access landscapes, light installations, festivals, exhibitions, tours, and industrial/community operations agreements. Landing Studio received a Progressive Architecture award for the Rock Chapel Marine project in 2013, the Architectural League Prize in 2015, and they were a winner of the Design Biennial Boston in 2015.
Marie is a licensed architect and received a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from the University of Michigan and a Master’s degree in Architecture from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she was a Presidential Fellow and recipient of the AIA Medal.
FRANZISKA AMACHER FAIA,
Amacher and Associates
Founder of Amacher and Associates, Architects. Franziska’s passion to build a sustainable environment is reflected in her work throughout her career from the design of house additions and renovations to designing communities to her urban designs and to her advocacy work. With her MArch from Harvard she started her career with the design of a solar heated farmhouse. She was a pioneer promoting sustainability with the design of many resource efficient and more healthful buildings, including award winning net zero buildings. But resource efficiency from optimizing layouts to reused or recycled materials to low toxicity were as strong factors as energy efficiency. Enhancing social sustainability through designing environments to promote viable and dynamic communities is another aspect of her work. Saving and recycling old buildings in the city was an important task not just for resource efficiency, but also to reinvigorate community identity through preserving cultural memory. Typical for her work is the redesign of a mixed-use building that won an award for reinvigorating a neighborhood and preserving a historic building.
ANN BEHA FAIA,
Ann Beha Architects
Ann Beha's leadership is marked by work with strong historical, cultural and educational content, designing buildings which serve the public and expand the client's vision. Her firm, Ann Beha Architects, is Boston based but active nationally and internationally., Her current projects include the US Embassy in Athens for the US Department of State, the Renovation and Expansion of the Main Group Building 2 at MIT; the master plan for the Smithsonian Institute’s National Museum of American History; and her second expansion for the New Britain Museum of American Art.
Ann Beha is a graduate of Wellesley College, holds a Master of Architecture Degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and was a Loeb Fellow at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University. She has been Distinguished Visiting Professor of Architecture at the City College of New York, past Trustee and President of Historic New England, and member of Visiting Committees at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
JEFFRY BURCHARD AIA,

Jeffry Burchard is an Architect. He is a Principal at MACHADO SILVETTI in Boston where he designs architecture, urban design and master-planning projects throughout the world. He has recently completed the New York University Global Center for Academic and Spiritual Life in New York City and a master-plan for the 21 million square foot Tun Razak Exchange in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Since 2012 Jeffry has been a visiting faculty member at the Harvard GSD where he offers instruction in Core Architecture Studios, advises thesis students, and is involved in various administrative committees. He is a frequently invited critic for student work, recently attending design reviews at the Architectural Association, RISD, Columbia, Cornell, Pratt, Northeastern, MIT, the New York Institute of Technology, and the University of Toronto. Jeffry holds two Masters degrees in Architecture, the first with Honors from the University of Idaho, and the second a post-professional Masters with Distinction from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Jeffry’s work and writings have been featured in publications such as CLOG, IntAR, Competition, Platform, StudioWorks, and Architect Magazine.
HECTOR TARRIDO-PICART,

Héctor Tarrido-Picart graduated from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design with dual degrees in Landscape Architecture and Urban Design. He was the President of the Harvard Graduate School of Design – African American Student Union (GSDAASU) from 2013-2015. He has been published in the *Harvard Design Magazine, *the *Harvard Journal of African American Public Policy, Aggregate Online Magazine*. Tarrido-Picart's #BlackLivesMatter Mapping Project is part of a summer fellowship grant the GSDAASU received from the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies.
MARYANN THOMPSON FAIA,
Maryann Thompson Architects
Maryann Thompson founded Maryann Thompson Architects in 2000. She specializes in architecture that is sustainable, regionally driven and that attempts to heighten a sense of its immediate site and landscape. Maryann carries degrees in both architecture and landscape architecture, bringing to her practice an interdisciplinary approach where issues of site and landscape are central to design thinking. Recent projects completed and in process include Pier 2 and the Warming Hut at Brooklyn Bridge Park, Princeton Childcare Center and The Visitor Center at Walden Pond State Reservation. Her work has been widely published, such as in Architectural Record, Design New England and A+U, and her work has received numerous awards and honors, including two AIA National Honor Awards, an AIAny Merit Award, numerous AIA New England Design Honor Awards, and BSA Honor Awards for Design Excellence. Maryann is a Professor in Practice of Architecture at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University, where she is a member of the Architecture faculty and teaches core studio.
FRANO VIOLICH FAIA,
Kennedy & Violich Architecture
As a Founding Principal at KVA Matx, Frano Violich has created an interdisciplinary design practice which engages material fabrication, digital technology and the conservation of natural resources to expand the public life of buildings and cities. Violich studied Architecture at UC Berkeley and received his MArch from Harvard. Violich has served as Design Commissioner with the BSA, the Editorial Board of Architecture Boston, and is currently on the Honors & Awards Committee. KVA has worked internationally including “Smart Materials” housing in Hamburg, Germany, and the Portable Light Project in Mexico and Brazil. Since 2013 the firm has completed the E34th Street ferry terminal on Manhattan’s East River, a new Law School at U Penn, Harvard’s Anthropology Building and is about to break ground on an Institute for Data Science at the University of Rochester. KVA’s material research division Matx has developed designs and technology applications for Philips, Herman Miller, 3M, North Face and the US Department of Energy. The firm’s design work for the German-based Meister Consulting Group, now headquartered in Boston, has extended to include the digital fabrication of all of its furniture and acoustic wall panels. Violich has lectured widely and taught at RISD, Berkeley, UVA, Michigan, and was Cornell’s Gensler Visiting Professor in Spring 2014.

James S. Russell, FAIA, is an architecture critic and journalist, who writes for numerous publications, including The Economist, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Architectural Record and the Atlantic’s CityLab. He blogs at www.jamessrussell.net. He was the architecture critic at Bloomberg News for nine years. Mr. Russell was a long-time editor at Architectural Record magazine, where his work helped the publication win a National Magazine Award and other industry awards.
His book, The Agile City: Building Well Being and Wealth in an Era of Climate Change, was published by Island Press. It argues that adapting cities and communities can quickly slow global warming and blunt its effects. He is an adjunct professor at Architects. He lives in New York City.

Stephen Cassell, AIA, LEED AP holds an undergraduate degree in architecture from Princeton University and received his Master of Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. He has twice served as the Shure Professor at the University of Virginia and as the Friedman Professor at the University of California at Berkeley. He has taught at Harvard, Princeton, and MIT, and lectured throughout the United States and abroad. Stephen was a member of the New York City Green Codes Task Force. He is Chair of the Van Alen Institute and is on the Leadership Committee of the Lower Mississippi River Delta Design Initiative.

Principal at SYSTEMarchitects, Edmiston is also an associate professor at the City College of New York School of Architecture. SYSTEM’s work has won the AIA Wilkinson Award, the AIA New Housing New York Competition, an Australian Timber Design Award, the Bank of America Design Award, the McGraw Hill Best Construction Award, and an Architzer A+ Award for Architecture + Materials. Perhaps his most influential work is BURST*008 with Douglas Gauthier, a prefab house commissioned and fully constructed by the Museum of Modern Art.
Edmiston is the recipient of the Harkness, Fulbright, Lindbergh, and Beyra Hadley Fellowships, and the Department of Energy’s Center of Excellence Fellowship. His work has been featured in Domus, Abitare, Bauwelt, Log, Architectural Record, LeFigaro, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Financial Times, The New York Review of Books, Vanity Fair, and Time Magazine.

Diane Lewis Architects
Emma Fuller has worked on and overseen the design and construction phases of diverse scale projects, which date from the AIA 150+ Brunner Grant exhibition, to large urban projects such as the winning competition project Riverview Music Campus and Adaptive Reuse Project at Sarasota Florida. She was the Project Architect for the design and execution of the Adams Penthouse on CPW, and the Quadrata House Bridgehampton, as well as the current schematic design and sustainability study for an estate in Greenwich Connecticut and an institutional master plan in progress.
She is Visiting Assistant Professor at Pratt Institute, and has recently designed and installed the exhibit “Richmond as a Work of Art” supported by a grant from CultureWorks. She has published numerous essays and her most recent articles can be found in both the Richmond Times Dispatch and Style Weekly on the issues of urban design in Richmond VA where she was raised. Current projects include a research and drawing study of Torino as well as advocacy proposals for significant works of architecture in Richmond.
ELIE GAMBURG,

Elie Gamburg is a Director at Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates (KPF). Since 2002, he has designed projects in the United States, Asia, Europe, India, and the Middle East housing a variety of programs including academic, mixed-use, master planning, office, residential, and retail. Mr. Gamburg is a graduate of Harvard’s Graduate School of Design, where he was awarded the Kevin V. Kieran Prize for highest academic performance. He has been a professor of studio design at NYIT, taught introductory studios at Cornell, and has served as a guest critic and lecturer at Harvard, Yale, Cornell, University of Pennsylvania, and Syracuse among other institutions.
Domestically, Mr. Gamburg worked on the 9.5 million-square-foot Boston Seaport Square "Innovation District" Master Plan and on the concept design for NYU’s Center for Urban Science and Progress (CUSP) in New York. Presently, Mr. Gamburg is designing a new 40-story LEED Platinum office building that will be among the first completed in Beijing’s new Central Business District. Other office projects include Harbin Bank’s headquarters in Harbin, China, and the First International Finance Center (FIFC) in Mumbai, which is KPF’s first fully constructed project in India, and one of just a handful of Indian buildings that have attained LEED Gold status. The FIFC was named the “Best Building of Mumbai” in 2012 and is home to tenants including Citigroup, Apple and Oracle.

Audrey Matlock leads Audrey Matlock Architect, a NYC firm is committed to fusing architecture, technology landscape and contemporary culture. Her project base is international with a range of building types that includes cultural, commercial, residential, exhibition and multi-use. Her tools are analysis, research, multidisciplinary strategies and innovative thinking. She is especially focused on the visual and performance possibilities of combining inventive engineering with architecture in the design of buildings. An active member of the architectural community, Matlock participates on design juries and panels, and lectures and teaches regularly throughout the US and in Turkey. She is strongly committed to educating clients, students and colleagues—to challenge preconceptions and lift expectations for our built environment. As a LEED-accredited professional, Jeffrey believes sustainability is an integral component of architecture. Thaddeus Pawlowski is an urban designer who has worked At NYC Department of City Planning, Mayor's Office of Housing Recovery and Office of Emergency Management. He earned his Masters in Architecture from University of Pennsylvania, recently finished a Loeb Fellowship at Harvard University and is now teaching Urban Design at Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation. He has lectured around the world and published extensively on urban design and climate change adaptation.
NINA RAPPAPORT,
Nina Rappaport is an architectural critic, curator, historian, and educator. For over seventeen years she has been publications director at Yale School of Architecture, for which she edits the bi-annual magazine Constructs, exhibition catalogs, and the Studio Books series.
She directs the project, Vertical Urban Factory, which includes a traveling exhibition, public programs, and a book to be released in September with Actar 2015. She curated the exhibitions on Ezra Stoller, The Swiss Section at the Van Alen Institute, and Saving Corporate Modernism, at Yale. She authored the book Support and Resist: Structural Engineers and Design Innovation and co-edited the books Ezra Stoller: Photographer and Long Island City: Connecting the Arts. She has written numerous essays on structural design, architecture, and global industrial landscapes. She is a founding board member of Docomomo US and NY/Tri-State.
CATERINA ROIATTA AIA,

Caterina received her Doctor in Architecture Degree from the IUAV Instituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia in Italy and her Master from the GSD, which she attended as a Fulbright Scholar. Following her studies, she worked at Vignelli Associates, Pei Cobb Fredd and Partners and Fox Pedersen Conway. She founded in 1997, with Robert Traboscia, TRA studio. The name TRA, represents not only the founders’ initials, but also the studio’s philosophy: finding the intersections between functionality and experimentation and the balance between the often opposing forces that are part of building in a urban context. Current projects span from restorations and additions of landmarked structures to new mixed use buildings. She is Co-Chair of the AIA historic Buildings Committee.
JOEL SANDERS, AIA,
Joel Sanders Architect
Combining teaching with practice, speculative projects with built commissions, Joel Sanders dedicates his work to the creation of innovative environments in response to today’s rapidly changing culture. Over the years, his work has explored the complex relationship between culture and social space, looking at the impact that evolving cultural forces (such as gender identity and the body, technology and new media, and the nature/culture dualism) have on the designed environment.
In addition to being the Principal of his New York based studio JSA, Sanders is a Professor of Architecture at Yale University.
JSA projects have been featured in international exhibitions and drawings and models created at the studio belong to the permanent collections of MoMA, SF MoMA, Art Institute of Chicago and the Carnegie Museum of Art. The firm has received numerous awards, including six New York Chapter AIA Awards, two New York State AIA Awards, two ALA / IIDA Library Interior Design Awards, four Interior Design Best of Year Award, and two Design Citations from Progressive Architecture.
Sanders frequently publishes his work and critical writings in international publications such as Architectural Record, Architect, Interior Design, Architectural Digest, The New York Times, Wallpaper, and A+U. He is the editor of Stud: Architectures of Masculinity. Monacelli Press released a monograph of his work, Joel Sanders: Writings and Projects, in 2005. His most recent book, Groundwork: Between Landscape and Architecture, co-edited with Diana Balmori, was released by Monacelli Press in 2011.

WORKSHOP: Ken Smith Landscape Architect
Ken Smith is one of the best-known of a generation of landscape architects equally at home in the worlds of art, architecture, and urbanism. Trained in both design and the fine arts, he explores the relationship between art, contemporary culture, and landscape. His practice, Workshop: Ken Smith Landscape Architect, was established in 1992 and is based in New York City. He is committed to creating landscapes, especially parks and other public spaces, as a way of improving the quality of urban life. Much of his work pushes beyond traditional landscape typologies—plaza, street, and garden—to landscapes that draw on diverse cultural traditions and influences of the contemporary urban landscape. Smith’s approach is directed at projects of varying scales and types: temporary installations, private residential gardens, public spaces, parks, and commercial projects. With a particular emphasis on projects that explore the symbolic content and expressive power of landscape as an art form, the Workshop specializes in the investigation of new expressions in landscape design. Ken Smith is a graduate of Iowa State University and the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. He has taught and lectured at Harvard, the City College of New York, and other universities and institutions around the world. Smith’s work has been published widely in the popular and trade press.
SYLVIA SMITH FAIA,

Sylvia Smith formed and leads FXFOWLE's Cultural/Educational Studio, which has won numerous awards for design excellence. Since joining the firm in 1982, she has been responsible for program intensive projects of varying scope and size. From private schools and universities to large and small cultural institutions, she is constantly cultivating new ways to make architecture more expressive, enriching, and sustainable. Sylvia sits on the Board of Trustees and Executive Committee of Dickinson College, the Board of Directors for the Design Trust for Public Space and the Board of Directors of Storefront for Art and Architecture. She is a member of the Advisory Board of the Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation and the Yestermorrow School, and former Chair of the Fellows Committee for the AIA New York Chapter and the Dean's Advisory Board of the University of Virginia School of Architecture. In 2008, Sylvia was elevated to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects, and in 2013, Sylvia was awarded the American Institute of Architects’ Fellow’s Award in recognition of her commitment to professional development, mentorship, women’s advocacy, and design excellence.

Adam Yarinsky, FAIA, LEED AP holds an undergraduate degree in Architecture from the University of Virginia and a Master of Architecture from Princeton University. He served as the Sanders Teaching Fellow and the Eliel Saarinen Professor at the University of Michigan, and as the Shure Professor at the University of Virginia. He also taught at Harvard, Princeton, Yale, and other universities. Adam has lectured throughout the United States and abroad. He has also written for A+U, Places Journal, 306090, and other publications. Adam is a member of the board and executive committee for the Places Journal Foundation.
