This Gothic Revival brownstone church was added on to many times by many architects. The current Trinity Church is the third to occupy the plot at Broadway and Wall Street. The land was originally purchased in 1696. The Trinity Church we see today was designed by Richard Upjohn, one of the founders of the American Institute of Architects, and built between 1839 and 1846. Trinity Church became a defining symbol of the growing New York skyline and a bustling downtown, its soaring Neo-Gothic spire, surmounted by a gilded cross, dominated the skyline of lower Manhattan. It enjoyed the title of tallest NYC building from its completion in 1846 until 1890 and was a welcoming beacon for ships sailing into New York Harbor. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Trinity Church is one of the first and finest examples of Neo-Gothic architecture in the United States. The cemetery is also notable as the final resting place for ship builder Robert Fulton and Alexander Hamilton.
