Destination Marker #14 - Oil

About this Tour Stop...

Drilling was initially limited to the Southeastern perimeter of town and prohibited inside the city limits, but the temptation of instant riches proved too great. Soon, rigs popped up in school yards and backyards all across the East side of town as the “ka-thunk” sound of pumps and the flares from burn off filled the night sky. Oil or “Black Gold” brought new wealth in 1928 with a discovery well located about six miles southeast of this site. By 1935, 1,713 wells had been drilled as the oil field reached beyond NE 23rd Street and included working wells on the State Capitol grounds, some of which remain today.
