Painted in the late 20's to early 30's by one of the residents of the Hotel Des Artistes, Howard Christy, the 9 murals of naked beauties long graced the walls of the former Cafe des Artistes. They were so much a part of the Restaurant's ambience that when the Cafe closed in 2009, many feared that the murals would never again be seen. This turned out not to be true; they continue to be part of the decor.

1 West 67th St. (Hotel des Artistes) Built in 1915 as a “Cooperative” it was designed by the esteemed architect George M. Pollard. Its outstanding lavish Neo-Gothic style is celebrated by its display of decorative statuary and gargoyles on its façade representing the arts. It has ten floors and approximately 85 units with several penthouse apartments. Originally the front apartments facing West 67th Street were built as residences, where as the rear apartments (with enormous windows allowing in the favorable Northern light) were built as artist’s lofts, as time went by these lofts were converted to palatial apartments. The homes at the Hotel des Artistes offer such distinguished details such as exquisite paneling in the living and dining rooms, and 22 foot ceilings in the living rooms. Some of the upstairs bedrooms have balconies which overlook the living areas, and fireplaces are also featured in the apartments. The building amenities include 24 hour concierge, elevator operator, pool and squash court. It was also the home to the celebrated restaurant Café des Artistes. Some of its former residences include the former mayor John Lindsay, Noel Coward, George Balanchine, Rudolph Valentino, Fanny Brice, and Norman Rockwell.
