Working in the Beaux Arts style, Bartlett created these classically-inspired relief sculptures personifying History, Romance, Religion, Poetry, Drama, and Philosophy. Symbolically located over New York City's Public Library, these sculptures stand for the creative and inspiration one receives when one opens a book.

Raffaele Menconi and the Tiffany Studios created the bronze flagpole bases, which have been called the most beautiful in the country.

This mural is one of many in the New York Public Library that Laning created. They were painted from 1938-1942 as part of a Works Progress Administration commission. In this particular mural, Prometheus gives man knowledge and fire from the gods. This Greek myth is appropriate for the ceiling of a library, since knowledge resides in the pages beneath the artwork.

Sculptor Edward Clark Potter created the lions, which were carved in pink Tennessee marble by the Piccirilli brothers. They were later nicknamed "Patience" and "Fortitude" by Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia.

This sculpture of a female figure installed on fountain made of Carrara marble bears the inscription: "Beauty, old yet ever new, eternal voice and inward word."
